Tancama

TANCAMA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

Located in the valley of Tancama, this site was one of the most important pre-Hispanic settlements of the Sierra Gorda, with more than 42 structures, ranging from mounds and terraces to ball courts. It was occupied between 200 and 900 AD and has a beautiful setting at the base of the Cerro Grande mountain. It shows influences of both Mesoamerican and Huastecan cultural traditions.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Jalpan de Serra, follow Federal Highway 120 (San Juan del Río – Xilitla). You will see a well-signed exit on the right-hand side that will take you to the community of Tancama. From there you will follow the signs to reach the ruins.
