San Juan de los Durán

Nestled in the pine-oak forests and mountains of the eastern part of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve is the community of San Juan de los Durán. There you can hike on various trails and observe incredible landscapes from the top of the hill. The community is also an excellent base for visiting the famous Sótano de las Golondrinas (Cave of Swallows in Spanish), which is located in the neighboring state of San Luís Potosí and serves as habitat for a colony of white-collared swifts.

We suggest that you stay in the cabins operated by the community, since they are very comfortable and provide all the basic services. If you come to hike, do it with a local guide since they know the trails. The cabins have a dining area, where you can enjoy delicious local foods. Let the women know that you want to eat and they will prepare the food at the time you wish. It is also a way to generate a spillover effect that benefits the locals.
