Misión Jalpan

JALPAN MISSION

In the main square of Jalpan de Serra, a town that has received designation as pueblo mágico (magical town) is Santiago Apóstol’s Mission. Its construction began in 1751 and was completed in 1758. Jalpan Mission was the first work of Fray Junípero Serra in the region and a fine example of the mestizo-barroque style that he would become known for.

In 2003, the Mission was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the other four local missions attributed to Saint Junípero Serra.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Mission is located in the center of Jalpan de Serra, at kilometer 180 of Federal Highway 120 (San Juan del Río – Xilitla).
