CERAMICS

Every piece from Las Mariposas ceramic workshop is hand-crafted and inspired by the natural beauty and wildlife of the Sierra Gorda, with native birds and flowers appearing as recurring themes. Popular pieces from Las Mariposas include mugs and tea pots, decorative ceramic wall art, and plate sets.

Las Mariposas Ceramic Workshop

Las Mariposas ceramic workshop was officially founded in 2000 to give women in the community of Soledad de Guadalupe the chance to create a sustainable income using their traditional clay-molding skills.

Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) responded to Doña Dorotea’s (one of the group’s founding members) call for help. To translate their skills into a successful business, the women needed a proper space to work, better-quality clay, and an oven. With the support of GESG, the group was able to build a new workshop, with an oven capable of generating high temperatures needed to properly fire the clay.

Today, the women have found a niche for their creative work in the Sierra Gorda tourism market. “I love coming here,” says Doña Dorotea. “It feels more like home to me than my own home.”
